Requirements

Volunteers are highly-qualified, resourceful individuals capable of working independently on need-based projects developed in conjunction with partner organizations. Most opportunities are for trained healthcare professionals — not just doctors and nurses, but also social workers, health educators, lab technicians, etc. Opportunities for volunteers to work in information technology, management, or organizational development are also available.

The basic requirements for consideration include:*

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have a university degree
  • Have at least two years of relevant professional experience
  • Have a specific health-related skill or area of expertise
  • Meet professional licensure and certification requirements (if applicable)
  • Have a strong desire to improve healthcare in developing and transitional countries
  • Be of sound mental and physical health
  • Have fluency in English

*Please note that some assignments may have more specific requirements. These requirements will be indicated in the scope of work (SOW).

Current Opportunities

The VHC places qualified individuals at host organizations that need the long-term, onsite presence a volunteer can provide. VHC assignments are based on a scope of work that is defined in the field according to the current needs related to HIV/AIDS, covering objectives, tasks, a time period, and required experience and skills.

Application

There are several steps in the application and selection process, including an online application, telephone interviews, reference checks, and in-country professional registration (if applicable).

The applicant should be comfortable with all the information provided about the VHC program prior to submitting an application. Once an application has been submitted, a CV and cover letter indicating the applicant’s skills and interests should be emailed to vhc@aiha.com (the subject line should read: VHC Application – First & Last Name).
A strong preference is given to candidates with prior HIV/AIDS experience.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis unless otherwise noted. It is recommended that interested candidates submit an application to a specific assignment at least three months prior to the time they are available to volunteer. The process may be prolonged if you want to be considered for a future opportunity that is not posted.

If you are interested in serving as a catalyst for sustainable change and want to make a meaningful contribution to the global fight against AIDS, APPLY HERE.

The Twinning Center carefully reviews all applications and will contact candidates if there is a match with any of our current volunteer openings. Please note that due to the high volume of applicants, only individuals selected for interviews will be contacted.
