Ethiopia - Mental Health Advisor/Trainer

OVERVIEW OF VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT

In-country placement site:

Various sites throughout the country to provide training and clinical mentoring, as well as to conduct lectures

Volunteer Qualifications:

Required:

  • Board certified psychiatrist specializing in childhood and adult psychiatry
  • Thorough knowledge of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment, specifically antiretroviral therapy (ART) and adherence 
  • Experience providing training in on mental health issues associated with HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment
  • Extensive knowledge of host country’s health system and culture
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop cooperative working relationships
  • Must be able to collaborate and work effectively with various program/project implementation partners and officials of governmental and nongovernmental organizations
  • Previous experience working in a low-resource setting
  • Fluent in English and Amharic

OBJECTIVE OF THE VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT

Objective
The objective of the Mental Health Advisor/Trainer is to increase the capacity of clinicians and HIV/AIDS service providers to address mental health issues that can impact the prevention, care, and treatment of HIV/AIDS patients by increasing adherence to ART among dual-diagnosis patients (those with HIV/AIDS and mental illness and/or substance abuse problems).


ACTIVITIES OF THE VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT

Activities 

  • Provide training and mentoring on community integration strategies and barriers for people living with both HIV/AIDS and psychiatric disabilities, including supportive strategies for enhancing community integration
  • Develop and facilitate an extensive array of training and technical assistance based on current research in the field to a broad range of stakeholders
  • Provide regional training for staff at various PEPFAR-funded sites, including Johns Hopkins University (JHU-TSEHAI), Columbia (ICAP), University of Washington (I-TECH), University of San Diego (UCSD)
  • Conduct Train-the-Trainer workshops and comprehensive ART training on mental health and HIV
  • Conduct a seminar for US university treatment partner staff on mental health and HIV
  • Provide onsite clinical mentoring at identified ARV clinics
  • Lecture at Addis Ababa University ’s Department of Psychiatry

EXPECTED OUTCOMES OF THE VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT

Deliverables 

  • Complete monthly narrative and progress reports
  • Develop a written training curriculum on mental health and HIV

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARTICIPATING STAKEHOLDERS

Volunteer: 

  • Complete the scope of work in the timeframe outlined
  • Complete the Twinning Center ’s monitoring and reporting report monthly
  • Adhere to the AIHA Volunteer Standards of Conduct

Placement organization/institution: 

  • Provide resources necessary for volunteer to carry out his/her assignment successfully
  • Identify a placement site counterpart for the volunteer to ensure sustainability of volunteer activities
  • Submit quarterly performance assessment reports on the volunteer to the Twinning Center

AIHA Twinning Center: 

  • Conduct pre-assignment orientation and training for volunteer and placement site
  • Provide volunteer with safe housing, monthly living allowance, medical evacuation insurance, and travel-related costs to and from placement site
  • Provide ongoing support of volunteer as needed
